Synovial changes in hemarthrosis and traumatic effusion



Abstract
In order to investigate the synovial changes in hemarthrosis and post-traumatic synovitis, five samples of human synovial membranes were studied. Two as normal synovium were collected from cases without any joint disease; all came from the knee joint of patients requiring mid-thigh amputation for crushing lower leg injuries and diabetic gangrene of the foot.
Another two samples as hemarthrosis were obtained from the knee joint of patients with fracture of patella, and fracture of inverted Y-shaped intra-articular femoral condyle.
The remaining one sample was took off in-¢¥the knee" joint with chronic post-traumatic effusion with antero-medial rotatory instability for eight months.
Light microscopic study was carry out for synovial membrane stained with hematoxylin.eosin.
For histochemical studies, serial sections from the same paraffin blocks were stained -with methyl green-pyronin for R.N.A. and with a variety of stains for acid mucopolysaccharides including alcian-blue (P.H. 2.5) and toluidine blue.
As a result for these studies, the numbers of the R.N.A. positive cells and the intensity of there staining reaction showed more significant increase in post-traumatic synovitis with effusion and in hemarthrosis. And so, we agreed with the Roy and Ghadially¢¥s opinions (1966) that the protein concentration of synovial fluid is increased in traumatic joint effusion and hemarthrosis and the synovial cells in these circumstances has an increased capacity for protein synthesis.
